چکیده

Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast-like fungus found in avian excreta, soil, and decayed wood [1]. The respiratory tract is the primary route of cryptococcal infection from yeast inhalation, and the infection can disseminate to most other organs [2, 3], although the main target organs are the lungs and the central nervous system (CNS) [4]. The most common manifestations in cases of CNS involvement are meningitis and meningoencephalitis [5, 6]. An extradural lesion of cryptococcal infection in the CNS is a rare entity that is usually accompanied by osteomyelitis [7–14]. Cryptococcal infection is mostly found in immunocompromised patients [2, 4, 5]. However, up to 10–40 % of reported cases have been in immunocompetent individuals [5, 6, 15, 16]. An extremely rare case of isolated extradural cryptococcoma at the sacral spine without a contiguous bone lesion in an immunocompetent man is described. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of extradural cryptococcoma without a bone lesion. Case report

Spinal Cryptococcoma Mimicking Spinal Cord Tumor Complicated by Cryptococcal Meningitis in an Immunocompetent Patient

There are very few cases in the literature on spinal cryptococcomas occurring alone without cerebral involvement at onset. Although cases of cerebral cryptoccomas followed by arachnoiditis have been reported, cases of spinal cryptococcoma followed by cryptococcal meningitis are exceedingly rare. We present a patient with spinal cord cryptococcoma who subsequently developed cryptococcal meningit...

Multifocal Tubercular Osteomyelitis with Tubercular Breast Abscess: An Atypical Presentation of Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis of spine is common in a developing country like India. However, involvement of spine at multiple levels along with involvement of rib and tubercular breast abscess in an immunocompetent patient without any pulmonary involvement is extremely rare. Here we report a case of 53-year-old immunocompetent lady who presented with quadriparesis and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of spine ...

Cerebellar cryptococcoma in a non-HIV patient.

A 26-year-old female, immunocompetent, with dysmetria and dysarthria. Diagnostic imaging (Fig 1) demonstrated a cerebellar mass, with a pattern which may be associated to a tumor, although multiple hypointense centers surrounded by ring enhancement after gadolinium may suggest the possibility of many types of infectious lesions, including cryptococcoma. Histological analysis (Fig 2) confirmed t...

Cerebellar cryptococcoma in an immunocompetent adult patient.

Isolated cerebellar cryptococcoma in an immunocompetent patient is a rare condition. We report a case of an immunocompetent adult with isolated cerebellar cryptococcoma. The patient presented with chronic headaches for one year and was found to have multiple cerebellar abscesses on imaging. Our patient underwent resection of the lesion and the cryptococcoma was subsequently diagnosed by histolo...

Surgical Treatment of Benign Fibrous Histiocytoma as a Form of Intraspinal Extradural Tumor at Lumbar Spine

A benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) is one of the fibrohistiocytic groups of soft-tissue tumors for which spinal involvement is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, most spine-originating BFHs are bone tumors. We report the first case of BFH occurring in the intraspinal extradural space on the lumbar spine. A 66-year-old female presented with severe claudication symptom. The preoperati...
